LSS OF THE DAY: "THIS AIN'T A LOVE SONG" PERFORMED BY LAKISHA JONES ON AMERICAN IDOL

Hey, I got an excuse for that. I was listening to that on Tony. That's all!

I've been e-mailing one of my cousins through Friendster for the past couple of days now; he's living in Davao at the moment. I'm really worried about him. He's got a problem, you see; he's got this psychological disorder called "bipolar disorder" or "manic-depressive syndrome". I got something from the internet that'll hopefully help you guys understand this.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a type of mood disorder. Bipolar disorder was called manic depression in the past, and that term is still used by some people. It is a psychiatric illness that causes major disruptions in lifestyle and health.

Everyone has occasional highs and lows in their moods. But people with bipolar disorder have extreme mood swings. They can go from feeling very sad, despairing, helpless, worthless, and hopeless (depression) to feeling as if they are on top of the world, hyperactive, creative, and grandiose (mania).

This disease is called bipolar disorder because the mood of a person with bipolar disorder can alternate between 2 completely opposite poles, euphoric happiness and extreme sadness.

Symptoms of both mania and depression sometimes occur together, in what is called "mixed state."

The extremes of mood usually occur in cycles. In between these mood swings, people with bipolar disorder are able to function normally, hold a job, and have a normal family life. The episodes of mood swings tend to become closer together with age.

When a person is in the grip of this disease, chaos can occur. Bipolar disorder can cause major disruption of family and finances, loss of job, and marital problems.

Severe depression carries with it thoughts of suicide and actual acts of suicide and in some cases acts of homicide.

Extreme mania can lead to aggressive behavior and homicidal acts.

A number of persons with bipolar disorder may turn to drugs and alcohol to "self-treat" their emotional disorder, resulting in substance dependence.
Most people start showing signs of bipolar disorder in their late teens (the average age of onset is 20 years). These signs may be dismissed as "growing pains" or normal teenage behavior. Bipolar disorder may not be properly diagnosed until the sufferer is 25-40 years old, at which time the symptoms may become clearer.

Bipolar disorder occurs in both men and women. About 2.3 million people in the United States have the disorder.

Because of the extreme and risky behavior that goes with bipolar disorder, it is very important that the disorder be identified. With proper and early diagnosis, this mental condition can be treated.

We think that one reason for him getting this was because of his parents; particularly his Mom.

His mom is so strict when it comes to grades. I think that was the way her parents treated her when she was a kid so that's why she's doing it to my cousins right now (her husband is my Dad's brother). You know what they do every summer? STUDY. On Christmas break? STUDY. On vacations to other places? (their Mom insists that they bring their textbooks wherever they go) STUDY. Everywhere they go, STUDY, STUDY, STUDY. I remember my other cousin telling me before (the younger sister of my cousin who has the bipolar disorder) that she asked for a certain book for Christmas; I think it was either Harry Potter or some other fictional novel. You know what she got instead? A MATH BOOK. A BIG, THICK, STINKIN' MATH BOOK. She was upset, of course but she couldn't do anything about it because that was what she gave her. And that's what she does with her kids. I'm not saying that studying is wrong, but she could have at least let them have a break from their studying once in awhile. Give them space to breathe and just relax.

After finding out that her son had a disease, she started loosening up a bit. She started being nicer and becoming not as strict as before. I remember thinking to myself, "Well, it's about time!!"; maybe if she did that sooner then maybe my cousin wouldn't be that way right now. He got a tattoo lately and I was the first among our family to see it. I was in Manila at that time, dorm-hunting, and he accompanied me. He just flew in from Davao a few days before, but the moment he touched down, he later told me, all he wanted to get while he was in Manila was a tattoo. So he got one. But that wasn't the part that bothered me. He said that his parents only allowed him to go to Manila was that IF HE WILL NOT GET A TATTO (actually, he's got two, and he's saving up for ANOTHER ONE); but he did it anyway! Geez! His tattoo was his own design; i'll just show you the picture so I won't have to describe it:

FIRST TATTOO

SECOND TATTOO (and it's still red)

Although, I have to admit, his design (on his first tattoo) is original; gotta give him credit for that. He told me that when his parents found out, his Mom was cool with it. And I said, "Wait--what? Your Mom's COOL WITH IT?"; and then he said that his Dad went crazy, in a bad way. Those were not the reactions I was expecting. On the contrary, I was expecting the OPPOSITE. My Tito's not the type to blow his top; his wife fits that persona easily. So I was very surprised.

Now, he's looking for a part-time job so he can buy the guitar he wants so badly. And he's hitting the gym every chance he gets; he said that he's already lost 15kilos. He's always been a fat kid so to find out that he lost a lot of weight was the last thing I expected from him.

He's still under observation. I just hope that he'll be okay.

I had a quick chat with one of my former classmates in high school a few nights ago; she's also studying in UST and we sued to be in the same dorm last school year. She texted me because she found out that I was transferring to a new dorm; I told her that I was and then she started acting like my Mom. She kept on telling me to be careful and to watch out for hold-uppers and stuff like that. She even said that if I needed anything then I shouldn't hesitate to text or call her; and she offered to accompany me to the dorm if I wanted. Awwww. That was really sweet of her. We weren't exactly close from the beginning but we always got each other's back. I'm really thankful that I got someone like her that I can run to if I need help. She has no idea how blessed she made me feel.

The beginning of a new school year draws ever closer. *cue death march* I am sooooo not ready to go to school yet.

That reminds me of one of my favorite songs from GREASE 2. Read the lyrics and you'll see why

BACK TO SCHOOL
Spending my vacation in the summer sun,
Gettin' lots of action and a lots of fun.
Scorin' like a bandit 'til the bubble burst -
Suddenly it got to be September First.

Woe is me, all summer long I was happy and free.
Save my soul, the board of education took away my parole.
I gotta go back, back, back to school again.
You won't find me 'til the clock strikes three;
I'm gonna be there 'til then...
I gotta go back, back, back to school again.
Whoa, whoa, I gotta go... back to school again!

Geometry and history is just a pain,
Biology and chemistry destroys my brain.
Well don't they know that I deserve a better fate?
I'm really much too young to matriculate.

Well mama please, your child's come down with a fatal disease.
Mama said, "Come on you lazy bum now get your butt out of bed!"
"You gotta go back, back, back to school again!"
It's bye-bye fun, get your homework done,
You better be in by ten,
I gotta go back, back, back to school again.
Whoa, whoa, I gotta go... back to school again!

I got my books together and I dragged my feet,
Then I saw this angel boppin' down the street.
I said, "Hey, pretty baby, howsabout a date?"
She said, "I'm going to school, and I can't be late."

Well, I can see, that look in her eyes was sayin' "Follow me,"
And I was caught - I thought of playing hooky, but on second thought,
I gotta go back, back, back to school again.
You won't find me 'til the clock strikes three;
I'm gonna be there 'til then...
I gotta go back, back, back to school again.
Whoa, whoa, I gotta go... back to school ... again!!!

"Biology and Chemistry destroys my brain.." Sweet! Hahahaha!.

Dad's leaving for the U.S. on June 8. He'll be back sometime in July. I bet he's happy; he will finally get to see and spend time with his "special someone"

All for today!
